Our goal is to provide safe and stable housing for youth in order to get them off the streets of Whatcom County.
Whatcom County’s 2011 Point in Time Count found 57 unaccompanied homeless minors living on the street. (Experts estimate that this number is only 30% of the actual number of adolescents in need of housing and wrap-around services). Young people run away from home for a variety of reasons. Due to unhealthy issues in their homes, living on the street is often a better choice than remaining at home. Lack of parenting skills and support, as well as parents who reach a point where they are no longer able to provide for their children, leave vulnerable adolescents without a place to turn.
Renovations of the NWYS facilities will create safe housing and drop-in services essential to ending youth homelessness in Whatcom County:
- $260,000 in renovations
- Completed January 2012
The project will provide:
- Thirteen beds of emergency housing
- Three beds of transitional housing
- Drop-in services to 70 unduplicated youth
- Vocational services (education and employment readiness)
- Family reunification and/or permanent connections
- Laundry services
- Showers
- Meals
- Clothing
